Wild wonder of France, The Camargue

March 30th, 2010

The Camargue is located south of France between the Mediterranean Sea and the two arms of the River Rhône delta. This large and humid place (marshes) is the home of a very large number of birds, European species, but also birds migrating from Africa. The Camargue is also the home of a famous horse species, the rugged and intelligent Camargue horse (yes, same name). Honestly, this trip was magical, in only 2 days I got so many pictures that I ended up with 30 possible images for this post, so I decided to get down to 9 just to give you a taste of the place. As I always say, if you don’t have the experience, you don’t have the picture, well seeing 25 Camargue horses charging together in the marshes IS an experience, it makes your heart (well, and your camera) go crazy, a kind of “Lord of the Rings” feeling, I’m sure you know what I mean :) .

Bizz !

The bird against the sunset (#2) and the head-on galloping horse (#6) are my favorites.
What of the horsemen? Do they tend the horses for the Camargue preserve? Or, own the horses?
How do you think the Camargue compares to Point Reyes?

The guys are owning the horses and running a horse-riding business, they are taking people to the marshes with horses.
Well, Point Reyes is greener, colder, wilder and rocky, whereas the Camargue is hotter, flatter and much more rich in birds than in mammal, fair enough ? :)

Fair enough! Though, with the mountains in the background of some photos, I would not have suspected flatter. Interesting…
Seems like a good place indeed for a horseback ride – see the place without getting your feet wet.

Where did you take the first one? Was it near L’espiguette?

All of them are stunning anyway.

Tough one…I’m not sure, I need to get back to a map of the area, I know where it is but couldn’t tell you the name. Just get back to me later. :-)
