Lyon’s Festival of Lights

December 9th, 2009

It’s been more than a month since I haven’t posted on this blog, I’m really sorry about that. I’m now back in France and didn’t have much time to travel around and use my camera. The 5D II is back on track (thanks Canon) and the only small outing I’ve been able to do is yesterday, to the Festival of Lights in my home town, Lyon. The is not my usual kind of photography but it’s always interesting to try different things. I have been celebrating this Festival since my childhood and I’ve seen it change and grow through the years, it is now a huge event. Even if people are not religious, they almost all place candles along the outsides of all their windows, I guess it gives us a feeling of being part of something, and as a kid, the moment is quite magic.

There you go:

  • #1: Inside the Fourviere Basilica, people are lighting candles.
  • #2: In the old Lyon, a clown is performing in the cold.
  • #3: Louis XIV statue, Ferris wheel in Background, slow shutter speed.
  • #4,#5: Rose-window lit from inside the cathedral.
  • #6: Terreaux Square during the show “Let’s play with time”.

Great shot with the Ferris Wheel. I’ve never been to Lyon, but my wife and I spent a couple weeks in Paris last summer — my wife’s lifelong dream, and she loved it. Hope you can get out soon to show us some interesting French and European nature photography!

    Hey John,
Sure, next stop is the Alps, I hope between Christmas and the 31st…stay tuned.

    Hello, Manu, part 2.

Wow, wow, wow…mind blowing to see your pictures and think of the event. This is an evironment we don’t have, and you folks have preserved it, treasured it, enhanced it.
You should do a photo essay of the Fourviere Basilica, it is a portal to another time.
Yes, I agree with John W. – the Ferris Wheel photo is surreal! It could not be perceived except by the camera.
But then…you did anticipate the outcome, huh?

Je suis bien d’accord avec tes copains ! Comment vont-ils, d’ailleurs ? Bien, on dirait …

Walt: I’m actually currently working on the Fourviere Basilica. I want to work from the rooftop, but to do that, I need to negotiate with them, this is what I’m currently doing. For the shot of the Louis XIV Statue, I was anticipating the silhouette kind of shot (and the slow shutter speed) but I discovered the idea of putting the head in the circle when I had the eye in the viewfinder.
JY: Absolument, cette voiture n’est pas prête d’être envoyée a la casse :)
