Butterflies time !

December 28th, 2009

Yesterday I went to a butterfly exposition in our city park, the “Parc de la tête d’or” (Golden head park). I had never seen such butterflies, they were quite amazing, in size and color. It was a good opportunity to use my Macro lens and flash. With maybe 100 butterflies in a small room, the place was a photographic paradise, I spent something like 2 hours there but I could have stayed an entire day without getting bored. #5 and #8 are my favorite, they give a different view. Naturally, all the butterflies photographed are alive!

Betz says: As always, your photos are excellent. I really like #6. The wings are so delicate, the colors iridescent. #11 and #12 are stunning also and present a close view of the false “eyes” on the wings that help protect them from predators. So ephemeral, so beautiful…nature’s creations are often beyond our imagination. You have a true gift for finding nature’s beauty in your photography.
Walt says: bugs are such nutzy creatures, although, butterflies in a beautiful way.
#6 is just incredible for its gossamer wings…more so when you see the slightly off registration of the back wing with the front. It draws you into the picture. Nice lens!
#10 is great for the sipper tube…just crazy. Is the octagon reflection in its eye a consequence of the lights, the lens, or the construction of the eye? I had the opportunity once to stare into a bug’s compound eye – all these little light pipes leading a curved path into its head…alien.
I like #11 for its composition. Butterflies are rather complex creatures, huh?

We hope you, your family and friends are well and had a good holidays. We wish you a Happy New Year for 2010.

Thanks for your comment and all the best to both of you for 2010!
The octagon reflection is due to the flash and the construction of the eye.
